The Gulu Women Dairy Farmers Association, today also registered as a Cooperative under the name of Gulu Community Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society, was founded in 1997 with 7 members all were women, and steadlly increased with view of empowering the rural poor women both financially and socially.
Their milk business started about 4 years ago after receiving support from the NUSAF (North Uganda Social Action Fund), a government organization funded by the World Bank in support to communities in the districts of northern Uganda that have been ravaged by conflict.
It constitutes of 94 farmers divided in 14 farmer groups with most of their members that received grants in kind by Heifer International. WIN started working with the GWDFA since August 2010, when the group had a 300 liters milk cooler but received about 400 liters of milk per day from members. Given the high demand, all the milk is sold everyday with few exceptions . The Yogurt Production was still at 50 liters per day produced but could take up to 2 or 3 days to be sold up.
The association had proposed to venture into a dairy value addition by making pasteurized milk with yogurt in ration on 1.800 liters: 1.200 liters per day.
Since March 2011, the Gulu Women Dairy Farmers Association has been granted funding for the proposed project who will be used to streamline production, storage and sale of dairy products. The milk production capacity is increase from 300-400l per day to reach 2000l per day .
The PUM, Netherlands Organization of Retired Senior Experts has also visited the group in March 2011 and decided to adopt the project for further partnership. The PUM and the Lions Club are ready to give technical and financial assistance to the Cooperative for further expansion and micro credits.
Yoba for Life Foundation is currently working with the group to assist them in improving their current Yogurt Production with a culture that will enhance the nutrition and health benefit as well as attract more consumers.
