Faculty of Agriculture and Environment – University of Gulu

University- Farmer – Extension Partnership in Agricultural Development

The Gulu University is located in northern Uganda where poverty levels are among the highest in the country. The region has experienced prolonged war that has destroyed the income base and affected skills development which has largely made the population resort to poor methods of natural resources exploitation.
Gulu University therefore put a great emphasis on rural transformation and sustainable development.

The University-Farmer Extension Partnership Project is designed to help the University to exploit the value of effective knowledge transfer between the farmer and the scientists. This project helps the Faculty to identify herself with the community around it. The Faculty studies the problems of the communities around it and arrives at innovative solutions together with the farmer.

The Faculty identifies and engages farmers within the surroundings of the University as partners in the training of agricultural graduates. The “University–Farmer–Extension Partnership” aims at:

  • Establishing strong linkages between farmers, the University and the Extension Agencies,
  • Setting up field practical laboratories for training and research,
  • Increasing agricultural production potential of the region.
